Event Description

Media scholar Joshua Glick returns to Docs In Progress to talk about documentary's long standing affinity with the home movie genre. Join us in the "living room" of Docs In Progress for a light brunch and vibrant discussion about how documentaries explore domestic spaces, tell stories about the people who live within them, and help to construct the very idea of "home."

Joshua Glick  is Assistant Professor of Film & Media Studies and English at Hendrix College and a member of Summer Session faculty at Columbia University. He holds a PhD in Film & Media Studies and American Studies from Yale University. Joshua’s research and teaching focus on documentary, race and popular culture, American social history, and emerging media. He served as a curator and produced the award-winning documentary This Side of Dreamland  (2016) for the traveling museum exhibitionConey Island: Visions of an American Dreamland, 1861-2008. Joshua’s book,  Los Angeles Documentary and the Production of Public History, 1958-1977, was recently published by the University of California Press. He is currently working on a new book project on contemporary nonfiction media and collaborating on the documentary, Last Days at the Duncan, which explores the contentious transformation of the historic Duncan Hotel in New Haven, Connecticut.

While this is a free program, space is limited, so an RSVP is strongly recommended.

Docs In Progress is all about building community through documentary film, but we are proud to be based in the vibrant, diverse, and historic communities of Silver Spring, Montgomery County, and the broader Washington DC Metropolitan Area. We have showcased short documentaries about these communities since 2010. Tonight's program screening is part of of the Ninth Annual Community Stories Festival taking place between November 8-14.
